Water villas of Lexis Hibiscus laid out in the shape of a hibiscus flower off Port Dickson, Malaysia

The Best Overwater Bungalows in Asia

In Southeast Asia, most rooms over the water are in Malaysia, some of them a drive from Kuala Lumpur, which makes them some of the easiest overwater stays to reach. The Maldives, in South Asia, has the widest choice of all.

The Short Answer

Our top pick is Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson in Malaysia. Every one of its 522 water villas has its own pool and steam room, the Executive villas sleep four and have a glass floor panel, and it is a mid-range resort you reach by road from Kuala Lumpur, with no boat or seaplane.

  • For quiet luxury: Pangkor Laut Resort, a private island where the Sea Villas stand on stilts over the water. You can't swim from the villas, and Sea Villas take guests 12 and over.
  • In the Philippines: El Nido Resorts Lagen Island, whose Water Villas sit above the lagoon, a 30-minute boat ride from El Nido's airport.
  • For the most choice: the Maldives, where Baros and the budget Embudu Village are a short speedboat ride from the airport. See our Maldives guide for more.

Port Dickson is on the mainland coast of the Strait of Malacca, not a coral atoll, so don't expect the clear lagoon water of the Maldives from your deck.

  • Pangkor Laut: a drive of about 3 hours from Kuala Lumpur (3 hours 40 minutes from KLIA airport) to the Marina Island Pangkor jetty in Lumut, then a speedboat of about 15 minutes. Boats to the resort run between noon and 3 pm, and the transfer is charged separately.
  • Lagen Island: flights to El Nido's Lio Airport leave from Clark, Cebu and Bohol, and the 30-minute boat to the resort is included.
  • Maldives: fly to Velana airport in Malé. Baros is 25 minutes by speedboat, with boats at any hour, and Embudu Village 20 minutes; the boat is usually charged separately, so check each resort's transfer page before booking.
