Overwater bungalows on the reef edge and yachts anchored in the Bora Bora lagoon, French Polynesia

The Best Overwater Bungalows in Bora Bora

Most Bora Bora resorts sit on the motus, the flat islets around the lagoon, looking back at Mount Otemanu. What sets them apart: plunge pools, glass floors, how many a bungalow sleeps and access to the main island.

The Short Answer

Our top pick is Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora. Its plunge-pool overwater suites have a temperature-controlled infinity-edge pool, ladders from the lower deck into the lagoon and views of Mount Otemanu, and with one or two bedrooms they sleep up to six, so they work for a honeymoon or a family trip.

  • For glass floors and a butler: the St. Regis Bora Bora, whose overwater villas have glass-panel floors and whose Royal villas have their own pool.
  • For the most plunge-pool rooms: the Westin Bora Bora, where 62 overwater bungalows and villas have a saltwater plunge pool.
  • On a mid budget: Maitai Polynesia, near Matira Beach on the main island, with 13 overwater bungalows that sell out early.

None of the Bora Bora resorts we list is all-inclusive. For other islands in French Polynesia, see our Tahiti, Moorea and Taha'a guide.

A resort on a motu means a boat ride whenever you want to reach Vaitape, the main village; Le Bora Bora says it is 15 minutes across the lagoon. The InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa closed on June 1, 2026 for a full renovation, and the Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach is also closed, so neither is listed.

Getting to Bora Bora

  • International flight: you fly first to Tahiti's Faa'a airport (PPT). Air Tahiti Nui's nonstop from Los Angeles takes about 8 hours.
  • To Bora Bora: an Air Tahiti flight of about 50 minutes lands at Motu Mute, the airport on a motu in the north of the lagoon.
  • To your resort: every resort here is reached by boat from the airport, including Le Moana on the main island. Le Bora Bora says its boat takes about 10 minutes; the others don't publish a time.
  • A night in Tahiti: if your international flight lands late, InterContinental Tahiti is two kilometers from the airport and has its own overwater bungalows.
  • When to go: the dry season is May to October and the wet season November to April, according to Tahiti Tourisme. Humpback whales visit from about August to November.
