Resorts Where Kids Can't Stay Over the Water
- Adults-only resorts: Palafitos in Mexico (adults only, 18+), Royalton CHIC Antigua, Nayara Bocas del Toro (16+), and Adaaran Prestige Vadoo, Komandoo and Centara Ras Fushi (18+) in the Maldives.
- Family resorts with age limits over the water: Fiji Marriott Momi Bay has a kids' club, but its over-water bures are for adults 18 and over. The Conrad Maldives recommends its pool water villas for ages 16 and up, Meeru's Ocean Villas are adults only, Kuredu's Sangu Water Villas take guests 15 and up, and at Pangkor Laut in Malaysia the Sea Villas take guests 12 and up and the Spa Villas 16 and up.
- Minimum ages for the whole resort: Baros in the Maldives takes guests 8 and over, Urraca Monkey Island in Panama 12 and over, and St. George's Caye in Belize 15 and over (13 for divers).
- Children counted as adults: InterContinental Le Moana and InterContinental Tahiti charge children 12 and over as adults, and Akalki in Mexico does so from age 12.
Tips for an Overwater Stay With Kids
- Think about water safety. An overwater deck opens onto deep water. Punta Caracol asks non-swimmers to wear life jackets, and it is worth asking any resort how its deck and steps are set up before you book.
- Count heads carefully. Many overwater rooms take two adults and one child at most. Book a multi-bedroom villa or two rooms; Thatch Caye suggests adjoining overwater bungalows for families.
- Keep the transfer short. With small children, a speedboat resort near Malé, such as Bandos, about 10 minutes from the airport with a kids' club for ages 3 to 11, is easier than a seaplane.
- Look at meal plans. All-inclusive stays, as at Siyam World and Thatch Caye, mean no bill every time a child is hungry.
- Use the kids' clubs. Four Seasons Bora Bora runs Kids For All Seasons, and Soneva Jani has The Den, its kids' area with a pirate ship.
