By the Overwater Bungalow Resorts editorial team · Updated November 7, 2026
The Short Answer
Our top pick is Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort. It reopened in 2026 after a full renovation of its overwater villas, and it is five minutes from Moorea's airport and ferry dock, which are a 10-minute flight or about half an hour by ferry from Tahiti, so you can add it to any French Polynesia trip without another long journey.
- For a glass floor on Moorea: Hilton Moorea Lagoon, whose overwater bungalows have glass floor panels over the coral, or the mid-range Manava Beach Resort, which has glass floors and direct lagoon access.
- For a quiet honeymoon: Le Taha'a, a Relais & Châteaux resort on a motu, where the Bora Bora Overwater Suites face Bora Bora and have a glass floor.
- For a night by the airport: InterContinental Tahiti, two kilometers from the international airport, with overwater bungalows looking across to Moorea.
For the island most people picture, see our Bora Bora overwater bungalows guide.
The Islands Compared
| Island | From Tahiti's airport | Resorts here | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tahiti | 2 km by road | InterContinental Tahiti | First and last nights |
| Moorea | 10-minute flight or 30-minute ferry | Sofitel Kia Ora, Hilton Moorea, Manava | An easy add-on, mid budgets |
| Taha'a | 45-minute flight to Raiatea, then a 35-minute boat | Le Taha'a | Quiet honeymoons |
| Tikehau | Under an hour's flight, then a 15-minute boat | Le Tikehau | Snorkeling, remote atolls |
Taha'a has no airport, so you fly to neighboring Raiatea. Rangiroa's Hotel Kia Ora is closed for renovation, and we left out InterContinental Moorea and Le Méridien Tahiti because we could not confirm on an official site that they are open under those names.

None of these resorts lists a private pool in its overwater rooms; where there are pool villas, they are on the beach or in the garden. If a plunge pool over the water matters, look at Bora Bora or the Maldives. At InterContinental Tahiti, children 12 and over count as adults.
Getting to Moorea, Taha'a and Tikehau
- Arriving: international flights land at Faa'a airport (PPT) on Tahiti. Air Tahiti Nui's nonstop from Los Angeles takes about 8 hours.
- Moorea: a 10-minute flight or about half an hour by ferry. The Sofitel is five minutes from Moorea's airport and the Vaiare ferry dock, and the Manava is a few minutes away too.
- Taha'a: a 45-minute flight from Tahiti to Raiatea, where Le Taha'a's team meets you for a 35-minute boat crossing. A helicopter is an option from Tahiti or Bora Bora.
- Tikehau: 220 miles north of Tahiti and less than an hour's flight; Le Tikehau is a 15-minute boat ride from the village.
- When to go: Tahiti Tourisme puts the dry season at May to October and the wet season at November to April, when the water is warmest.
